LEONHARD EULER
Leonhard Euler
1707 – 1783
One of the greatest mathematical minds of all time.
Leonhard Euler, born in Basel in 1707, is remembered as one of the greatest mathematical minds of all time.
Growing up in the strong learning tradition of Switzerland, he became a thinker whose ideas shaped many subjects — not only mathematics, but also physics, astronomy, engineering, and even music.
Euler had a special gift: he could see patterns and connections that others missed.
He created new areas of maths such as graph theory and topology, and he made big discoveries in number theory, calculus, and complex analysis. Many of the symbols used in maths today —like π, i, f(x), Σ, and Δ— were introduced by him, making maths easier for everyone to read and understand.
Even when his eyesight became very poor, later in life, Euler continued to produce some of the most important work in scientific history. His ideas helped build better ships, improve microscopes and telescopes, and guide early engineers and scientists. The famous number e, used in so many formulas today, is named after him.
What made Euler truly remarkable was not just his brilliance, but his clarity. He had a way of explaining complicated ideas in simple, beautiful ways —something that still inspires young learners all over the world.
Inspired by the spirit and brilliance of Leonhard Euler, Swiss eduGLOBE honours this legacy by hosting the Euler Top 100 for Juniors, which will be inaugurated in 2027 in the historic Swiss Alpine village of Disentis as a global celebration of exceptional young mathematical talent.
